Lifestyles of the poor and nameless

Everyone's got an opinion

Former first lady Barbara Bush was quoted as saying "so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them," in a radio interview with the American Public Media program "Marketplace". The White House is now trying to distance itself from Ms. Bush's "personal observation" that "poor people in a relocation center in Houston are faring better than before Hurricane Katrina struck."

Ms. Bush seems to ignore the fact that these people did not ASK to be plagued by the storm; nor did they welcome the opportunity to have their belongings ruined by flooding and their loved ones maimed or killed as a result of the storm. Would she prefer that the displaced victims refuse aid and camp out on the White House lawn instead? Ugh.

In related news, I learned that the gov't is set to give out $2,000 debit cards to adult victims of Hurricane Katrina. "The unprecedented cash card program initially will benefit stranded people who have been moved to major rescue centers such as the Houston Astrodome" according to the Associated Press.

$2,000 may seem like alot, but it's really nothing when you consider the fact that some of these folks only have the clothes on their backs. They have to use that $2,000 to find food, clothing and shelter for an undetermined amount of time. I only hope that recipients use the money wisely, so that we don't see a real-life re-enactment of Dave Chappelle's "Reparations" skit.

Blogger Inside Man's two cents:

2G's for a down payment on a house? Nope. 2G's for a ride? Nope. 2G's to recover lost memories? Hell no. 2G's to eat until October? Maybe.....

Blogger Dee's two cents:

why are we mad at Barbara Bush? Was she ever a leader of our country? Just because she smiled and waved and read to some kids does not mean that she was ever a part of US goverment.

We love free speech so that rappers can curse and talk about what they are going to do to yo ass but when some simple transplanted upstate New Yorker misspeaks why are we up in arms?

So she said something stupid. We all say stupid things. In a situation like that without a team of speechwriters to back her up, something was bound to go wrong. Give Babs a break. She is not a policymaker.

Blogger Queen Bee's two cents:

While "Babs" may not have been an "official" policy-maker, she was a First Lady....and that role can not be underestimated. For a look at the perceptions, duties and importance of a First Lady, I direct your attention to "Living History" by Hillary Clinton. Her pet project was national health care reform; Barbara Bush's was literacy.

We could have the best presidential candidate in the world, but if his wife is a scamp or doesn't find favor with the public, guess who won't be in the White House.

If some entertainer had said it, it would have been a messed up statement, but nothing to write home about. "Babs" is not just some random woman, who HAPPENED to occupy the White House....she's the mother of our current prez. They say "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree".

Blogger Inside Man's two cents:

Would we say the same about Correta Scott King? Or how about Betty Shabazz? Beside great men exits great women, and with that union falls a great deal of responsibity in the convictions that describe their moral. The first family is supposed to hold the cornerstone of family values, and render a great responsibiliy in representing all of the "American" family correctly.

Blogger Dee's two cents:

oh come on kg and Professional P, this is America. Capitalistic, Paradoxical, and Rebellious. Yes, she is the mother of our fearless leader--doesn't that tell you something? I don't expect much from her. Why do you?
